PETS ARE FAMILY, TOO
A little preparation. A lot of love.
Whether your family is considering a pet or getting ready to welcome one home, start with a plan that fits your household. Adults remain responsible for the animal’s care and safety.
Before deciding
- Consider your space, allergies, schedule and the pet’s lifespan.
- Discuss daily care, exercise, training and who will help.
- Estimate food, supplies, routine veterinary care and unexpected costs.
- Check housing rules and learn about the needs of the animal you are considering.
Get ready for home
- Choose a veterinarian and ask about appropriate first visits.
- Make a safe, quiet space and check for hazards.
- Plan food, water, bedding and species-appropriate supplies.
- Use or borrow suitable items you already have when possible.
Share the responsibility
Give children manageable, age-appropriate jobs with adult supervision. Decide who covers mornings, evenings, weekends and travel.

The first week
- Give your pet time and space to settle in.
- Follow the veterinarian’s and adoption organization’s guidance.
- Introduce family members gradually and supervise children.
- Keep a simple routine and adjust as you learn what your pet needs.
For a pet that may be seriously ill or exposed to something poisonous, contact a veterinarian or emergency animal service promptly.
