❤️ Severe Allergic Reaction: What to Do

Quick first steps for families. Keep this guide somewhere easy to find and review it before you need it.

Emergency first: If anyone is in immediate danger, seriously injured, having trouble breathing, unconscious, or you believe the situation may be life-threatening, call 911 or your local emergency services now.

What to do

Treat breathing trouble or rapid swelling as an emergency

Call 911 immediately for trouble breathing, throat/tongue swelling, faintness, severe widespread symptoms or a known severe reaction.

Use prescribed epinephrine if the person has it

Follow the person’s prescribed emergency plan and device instructions. Do not delay emergency care while waiting to see if symptoms improve.

Keep emergency services involved

A severe reaction can recur. Follow dispatcher and medical instructions.

Do not give food or drink to someone struggling to breathe

Keep the airway situation the priority.

Bring medication information

If going to emergency care, bring the person’s allergy/medication information if readily available.
