🩹 Burn: What to Do

Quick first steps for families. Keep this guide somewhere easy to find and review it before you need it.

Emergency first: If anyone is in immediate danger, seriously injured, having trouble breathing, unconscious, or you believe the situation may be life-threatening, call 911 or your local emergency services now.

What to do

Stop the burning source

Move away from heat, flame, electricity or chemicals only when it is safe.

Cool a minor thermal burn with cool running water

Use cool—not ice-cold—running water. Do not apply ice, butter or household remedies.

Call 911 for severe burns

Seek emergency help for large/deep burns, electrical burns, chemical burns, burns affecting the face/airway, or any life-threatening concern.

Do not remove material stuck to the burn

Leave adhered clothing or material for medical professionals.

Cover loosely when appropriate

A clean, non-stick covering can protect a minor burn while you seek further guidance.
