🚗 Car Accident: What to Do

Quick first steps for families. Keep this guide somewhere easy to find and review it before you need it.

Emergency first: If anyone is in immediate danger, seriously injured, having trouble breathing, unconscious, or you believe the situation may be life-threatening, call 911 or your local emergency services now.

What to do

Get to a safer position if you can

If the vehicles can be moved safely and local conditions allow it, move out of active traffic. Turn on hazard lights. Do not put yourself in danger to move a vehicle.

Call 911 when anyone may be hurt or there is immediate danger

Call emergency services for injuries, fire, a dangerous roadway situation, suspected impaired driving, or whenever you are unsure whether urgent help is needed.

Check people before property

Ask whether anyone is hurt. Do not move a seriously injured person unless staying where they are creates an immediate danger.

Exchange basic information

When it is safe, exchange driver name, contact information, insurance information, license plate and vehicle details. Follow local legal requirements.

Document the scene only if it is safe

Photograph vehicle damage, road position, signs, traffic signals and the surrounding area without stepping into traffic.

Get the official report information

If police or another agency responds, ask how to obtain the incident/report number.

Follow up after you leave

Contact your insurer and seek medical evaluation if symptoms or concerns appear after the crash. Keep records together.
