🔥 House Fire: What to Do

Quick first steps for families. Keep this guide somewhere easy to find and review it before you need it.

Emergency first: If anyone is in immediate danger, seriously injured, having trouble breathing, unconscious, or you believe the situation may be life-threatening, call 911 or your local emergency services now.

What to do

Get everyone out

Leave immediately using the safest available exit. Do not stop to collect belongings.

Stay low if there is smoke

Smoke can make it difficult to see and breathe. Use the nearest safe exit.

Do not go back inside

Once outside, stay outside. Never re-enter for belongings or pets.

Go to your family meeting place

Use the outdoor meeting location your family chose ahead of time.

Call 911 from outside

Report the fire once you are safely outside. Follow fire department instructions.

Account for everyone

Tell firefighters immediately if someone or a pet may still be inside.
