🧒 Lost Child: Immediate Steps

Quick first steps for families. Keep this guide somewhere easy to find and review it before you need it.

Emergency first: If anyone is in immediate danger, seriously injured, having trouble breathing, unconscious, or you believe the situation may be life-threatening, call 911 or your local emergency services now.

What to do

Start immediately

Quickly check the immediate area while keeping another trusted adult at the last known location when possible.

Alert staff or authorities

At a store, venue, park or event, notify staff/security right away. Call 911 if the child is very young, vulnerable, in danger, or you believe this is more than a brief separation.

Give a clear description

Provide current clothing, age, height, photo if available, and the exact last-seen place and time.

Do not scatter without a plan

Coordinate search areas so adults know who is checking where.

Keep your phone available

Do not tie up the phone unnecessarily. Be ready for calls from staff or authorities.

After reunion

Review what worked and choose a family meeting-place strategy for future outings.
