💡 Power Outage: What to Do

Quick first steps for families. Keep this guide somewhere easy to find and review it before you need it.

Emergency first: If anyone is in immediate danger, seriously injured, having trouble breathing, unconscious, or you believe the situation may be life-threatening, call 911 or your local emergency services now.

What to do

Confirm the outage and check alerts

Check your utility or local emergency information when service is available.

Use flashlights instead of candles

Reduce fire risk, especially around children and pets.

Protect food safety

Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible and follow official food-safety guidance after a prolonged outage.

Use generators only outdoors

Never run a generator, grill or fuel-burning device inside a home, garage or enclosed area because of carbon monoxide risk.

Protect temperature-sensitive family members

Move to a safer heated/cooled location if extreme temperatures create a health risk.

Charge and conserve communication devices

Use battery packs and low-power mode when needed.
